Placemaking and Social Engagement with Public Art in the Asia Pacific Region is a special issue of CAP - Public Art Journal. This issue aims to illuminate the role of art in shaping new forms of public space, social practice, cultural belonging, and creativity in the Asia-Pacific region. Looking at new aesthetic and social issues highlighted by creative practitioners in the Asia-Pacific region, our editorial collective hopes to understand better current topics of importance to different societies in Asia and what public art means within them.

With the explosion of art creation and cultural activities in public spaces over the past decade, there has been an increase in new public art projects and socially engaged art in the Asia Pacific region. Now is a critical time to study and document the events, cultures, theories, and practices of these emerging Asia-Pacific public arts.

  • In the Asia Pacific, why do artists, curators, cultural institutions, and governments collaborate to plan new public art/socially engaged art projects and encourage public participation? What is their purpose?
  • Who are the public art/socially engaged art creators in the Asia Pacific? What are the standards and styles of public art in the Asia-Pacific region, and how are they evaluated?
  • How have contemporary art and cultural developments in the Asia-Pacific region shaped new public art and socially engaged art programs for community building and revitalization? What can we learn?

These are some of the core questions underpinning this particular journal focusing on public art in the Asia-Pacific region. Our research focuses on public art and socially engaged art projects established by contemporary artists/curators and cultural institutions in the Asia-Pacific region. We consider that public art can assist people in thinking about art and society in new ways. Socially engaged art can light up contemporary Asia-Pacific art practices and raise awareness of Asian cultural history. At the same time, both art forms can help shape new artistic public communities, propose new ideas and platforms for public engagement in Asia-Pacific societies, and help spark conversations about today’s social, political, and ethical issues.

Our editorial team sincerely looks forward to collecting articles, essays, or book/exhibition/project reviews to conduct a comprehensive study of contemporary public art in the Asia Pacific from the perspectives of art history, artistic and curatorial practice, social participation practice, architectural design, urbanism as well as many different perspectives.
