If you’re an author and wish to help, please share this page with the right person at your institution.

Join a special Network of libraries and other institutions supporting independent publishing in the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences.
Wisethorough, through initiatives like UrbanCreativity.org, connects researchers, practitioners, and cultural institutions around shared inquiries into how creativity transforms cities, knowledge, and society. By engaging with Diamond OA publishing at the creative frontier, your library or institution not only expands its researchers’ reach and visibility but also helps reduce the systemic publishing costs driven by legacy models.
Your support helps sustain a space where fringe creativity and academic rigor coexist, ensuring that this kind of research remains open, visible, and accessible to all.

Trusted. Visible. Sustainable.

Since 2014, Wisethorough has published over 670 peer-reviewed articles, across 70 issues and 34 volumes, and has created eight journals — six active and two archived.

An independent initiative founded and directed by Pedro Soares Neves, researcher collaborator at the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Lisbon. Wisethorough is supported by a core group of 10 co-editors and near 60 scientific committee international members, within a community of over 1,200 registered users.

Our infrastructure ensures discoverability, interoperability, and long-term accessibility, built on standardized XML/HTML full-texts and persistent DOIs assigned through our partnership with RCAAP, the Portuguese Open Access repository network.

We are currently expanding our indexing presence, maintaining compatibility with major international databases such as DOAJ, EBSCO, and SciELO — having already had two journals indexed in Scopus.

We follow COPE’s ethical guidelines and we are registered in the European Diamond Capacity Hub (EDCH), aligning our practices with European standards for transparent and sustainable open-access publishing.

Why We’re Different.

Our publications are crafted for both digital and print-on-demand formats, combining editorial precision with distinctive visual design.

We organise annual online seminars and an international conference at University of Lisbon, opportunities for exchange between research, art, and public space.

We operate on the edges of established fields, engaging with communities and practices often overlooked by mainstream publishing — from graffiti research to participatory urban art and architectural culture.

Why Support Matters

  • Equity: Our journals remain free to publish and free to read, ensuring persistent access for authors and readers worldwide.

  • Diversity: We highlight areas and formats often neglected by larger publishers — fringe research topics, from graffiti and urban creativity to art history, architecture, and cultural studies.

  • Visibility: Our interoperable infrastructure ensures our publications are indexed, highly visible and searchable globally.

  • Sustainability: With modest institutional support, we maintain professional standards while staying small, agile, and community-focused.

Supporting Wisethorough means contributing to the sustainability of an open, lightweight, independent publishing model. We cannot operate without our library members — their participation is the foundation of our activity.

For less than the cost of publishing a single APC with an incumbent publisher, your library helps sustain our Diamond Open Access portfolio of journals, ensuring hundreds of articles remain freely accessible to all.

We have already published submissions at no cost from authors at several universities worldwide — see the list of supported institutions and more in our Support Program brochure (PDF).
