Universities as Architecture of State Formation in the Gulf

A discussion on how Qatar University and Kuwait University leveraged differing architectural strategies in the construction of national legitimacy

Abstract

Across the decolonizing Gulf of the mid-twentieth century, the founding of a national university was among the first acts of a newly independent state. To build a university was to claim the capacity to reproduce a governing class on national soil and to internalize the formation of expertise the state required.
